After doing some research, it looks like LJ doesn't offer cross-posting from their platform, but Dreamwidth does allow for it (meaning the entries have to be written on DW first, and they will then be posted on LJ).

I'm testing this out now to see if it works, so apologies for the short post. :)

Amidst worry that LJ might be going down, I'm backing up my journal and Christian Fan Fic community with the website Blogbooker, and I'm copying anything else I want to save.

If LJ does go down - though I sincerely hope it doesn't - and you'd like to get in touch, you can find me and my stories on A03 here:

https://archiveofourown.org/users/LaughtersMelody/works

Or, on Faniction.net here, https://www.fanfiction.net/u/917006/Ani-maniac494, where you can PM me.

Or, I have also imported my journal over to Dreamwidth (under the same username), and I'm attempting to do the same with my comm, though we'll see if it cooperates.

While saving things, I realized I've had this journal since 2006. My goodness, the memories.

I hope to see you around, if not on LJ, then elsewhere around the web.

God bless!

I have been researching my family history, and I recently discovered that my great-grandmother's cousin, Joseph V. Truhler, was drafted and lost his life in WWI in 1918. He was only 24, and sadly, he was killed just an hour after joining active combat. According to the newspaper articles I've found, the family first heard the news from his friends and fellow draftees who had witnessed his death (they sent the news in their letters home), but the Army told the family that they had no record of him being killed in action and they shouldn't give up hope. Finally, the news did make its way from the front to Army officials who confirmed his status as KIA.

It took 3 years to get his body returned to the States. (He was initially buried on the battlefield, then disinterred and reburied elsewhere in Europe before the family's request to have him returned was fulfilled.) I can't imagine how hard those years must have been. His final resting place is a shared grave with his parents. He died before he married and had children, and I'm sure that his parents wanted to keep him close.

That family story had been lost over the years - my great-grandmother never talked about it that any of her grandchildren remember, and we honestly had no idea that any of our family members had served and died in WWI. (We have a number of WWII veterans, but we didn't know that we had service men in WWI.)

Determined to make sure that his story is not forgotten again, we reached out to a photo restoration service who did an amazing job restoring a photo of Joseph from the newspaper article that described his funeral in his hometown.

Since it is Veterans Day, it seems like a good time to share it in honor of his memory and the memory of many other brave men and women who have given their lives for their country:

I wanted to recommend a wonderful Youtube channel I found – Ocean Conservation Namibia.

With all the bad news in the world these days, it's encouraging to simply see people doing good. They rescue all kinds of wildlife, but they focus most of their efforts on the Cape fur seals of Namibia, as there is a big issue with entanglements there. (They have saved seals that have gotten caught in everything from work shirts, to dog leashes, and even a kitchen strainer.) The main cause of entanglements, though, is fishing gear, such as illegal netting or fishing line. The videos are sometimes hard to watch (a few of the seals have significant injuries, and occasionally, they are too late to help the seal). But, they are careful to warn viewers if a video will be particularly sad or graphic, and overall, it really is just encouraging to see people making a difference.

It's difficult, physical work, too – Cape fur seals grow very large as adults, and it can take four men to try to hold down one big, bull seal. They do occasionally get bitten by the seals they are trying to recue – one of them needed stitches and was in the hospital for a short time last year. But their determination to keep going is inspiring as well.

A documentary is actually set to be released about their work early next year. The trailer is below, and below that is a video of one of my favorite rescues.

The trailer for the documentary:

One of my favorite rescues (This poor seal! He must have felt such relief when he was free.):

I highly recommend their channel. :)

Title: While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night
Author: LaughtersMelody
Rating: G
Fandom: The Chosen
Disclaimer: The Chosen is a small property compared to a Hollywood production, and I emailed the distributors of The Chosen to make sure they didn't mind fanfiction being written about this fantastic show. In their response, they said that fanfiction for The Chosen is legal as long as "you claim no ownership and make no money." So, to make it very clear, I don't in any way own The Chosen, and I'm receiving absolutely no monetary compensation for this. I was just inspired by the beautiful writing of the show, and couldn't resist exploring their portrayal of the events described in scripture. (The title for this fic is borrowed from the Christmas carol of the same name.)
Genre: Angst/Spiritual
Pairing: None
Type: One-Shot
Spoilers: The Chosen's Christmas episode is based on the events described in Luke Chapter 2, so there are no spoilers in that sense, though this fic does include some character-centric spoilers for the episode and mentions of other plot elements. :)
Characters: Simon
Secondary Characters: Matthew, Aaron, Natan
Summary: After a day filled with rejection – from the Pharisees in the marketplace, and even from those he would call his friends – a disabled shepherd hears the Good News and is forever changed. (Based on the Christmas episode of The Chosen, "the first multi-season show about the life of Christ," which in turn is based on the events in Luke Chapter 2.)

A/N: The Chosen is one of the most powerful pieces of film and storytelling I have seen. It is "the first-ever-multi-season TV show about the life of Jesus." This fic is based on their Christmas episode, "The Shepherd," the first short film they created, which then became a multi-season show. If you'd like to see it for yourself, you can watch it on The Chosen's YouTube channel as, "The Chosen Special Christmas Episode."

As always, I thank my Lord Jesus Christ for his incredible mercy and grace, and his many blessings.

As mentioned before, I saw this 10 Day challenge on [livejournal.com profile] metallidean_grl's journal, and then elsewhere around LJ. At first I wasn't going to join in, but it does look like fun, so I decided to give it a shot. :D

The rules from the challenge:

1. Post 10 celebrities that you have been in love with (had a crush on).
2. Post 1 "crush" per day.
3. No comment.
4. Just one picture.
5. Then ask a friend to take up the challenge.

I was right about not making it to ten because I have now reached the end of my list here at number 8. (I realized I had accidentally called Hugh Jackman number 6 in the title of my last post - he was actually number 7. :) ) I just had to save Jensen Ackles for last. :D

If anyone reading this wants to take up the challenge, please do! :D It's definitely a fun list to put together, lol.

Day 1 - Ray Park

Picture under the cut... )

laughtersmelody: (Default)
I saw this on [livejournal.com profile] metallidean_grl's journal, and I thought it would be fun to try, since it’s been quite a while since I’ve posted anything. (Thank you for the idea, [livejournal.com profile] metallidean_grl! :) )

1. Do you put ketchup on a hot dog?
Yes. Though, once in a while, I like to change it up with just mustard.

2. Choice of soda?
I don’t drink soda often, but my very favorite is Orange Slice.

3. Do you own a gun?
No, I don’t.

4. Can you swim?
No.  I almost drowned once when I was little, which sort of soured the experience for me.  I did try to learn again when I got older, but I discovered that I don’t really float easily, which puzzled my friends who were eagerly trying to help at the time.  Nothing short of holding me up seemed to work.  I’m tall enough to wade in fairly deep water, though, and I can wade with the best of them.

5. Hot dogs or cheeseburger?
Cheeseburger most of the time. It’s honestly my go-to order at most restaurants, even if it's not fast food.  Cheeseburgers generally turn out to be good, so it’s a safe bet. I do like hot dogs too, but I think cheeseburgers would win out.

6. Favorite type of food?
It’s a classic, but I have to say pizza.

7. Do you believe in ghosts?
I believe there are spirits, demons, and things we can’t see and don’t know about – the Bible talks about “powers and principalities” (Ephesians 6:12). But I don’t believe in “ghosts” in the traditional sense.

8. What do you drink in the morning?
Water is usually the first thing I drink.  I don’t actually drink coffee.  After that, milk.  (My parents are originally from Wisconsin.  Dairy is practically in my blood.)

9. Can you do 100 push-ups?
No.  But I used to be in gymnastics when I was in much, much younger, so back-bends were common.  Now, though, no.

10. Summer, Winter, Spring or Fall?
I think that all the seasons have something special about them, but winter is my favorite. I love how quiet and peaceful the word is when it snows, and I enjoy curling up under a warm blanket with a good book.

11. Your favorite hobby?
Reading and writing come out on top, but I love to do anything that uses my imagination. I’m a crafter, so I make most of the gifts I give to people, though I don’t know if I’d call that a hobby exactly.  I just love to surprise family and friends. (And speaking of reading, I must laugh at myself because I was just reading Lord of the Rings fan fic the other day, and right now, I almost typed “hobbit” instead of “hobby.”)

12. Tattoos?
Nope, none.  I have to admit, they’re not something that has ever interested me, though I know some people like them.

13. Do you wear glasses?
Yes, I do.  My regular vision is terrible, and I have a problem with dry eyes, so my eyes wouldn’t tolerate contacts. Also, I just recently learned that I am allergic to plastic because I wound up having a reaction to the new plastic glasses frames I got. It was a valuable thing to learn, I suppose.  No fun, but valuable nonetheless. The replacement frames are now stainless steel.

14. Do you have a phobia?
I don’t know if I would call it a phobia exactly, but I am not a fan of fire.  I’m not frightened to the point that I can’t stand it, but I am very cautious around it and prefer not to deal with it if I don’t have to.

15. Do you have a nickname?
Not really.  I have been told that I am hard to find a nickname for, and this comes from people who insist that they nickname everyone.

16. Three favorite drinks?
1. Milk
2. Lemonade
3. Eggnog (though only around the holidays)

17. Biggest downfall?
Pride, I think. Pride can be such a subtle thing that you sometimes don't notice it. Until you think, “I'm so humble.” *pause* “Um, wait...”

18. Rain or snow?
I like both, but my favorite is snow.  The world looks beautiful when it is covered in white.

19. Can you change a tire?
I would like to learn, but right now, no.

20. Favorite flower?
I have always loved roses.

21. Can you drive a stick?
I can’t drive at all, actually.  I live in a small enough town that I can ride my bike most places.  It’s much less expensive when trying to pay off a student loan.

22. Ever gone skydiving?
No, and I don’t ever want to.  Knowing how things go, I’m worried I would be the person who had something go wrong with the 'chute opening, despite several safety checks.

23. Kids?
No, though I would love to have a husband and kids someday. I don’t know that it will ever happen, though.

24. Favorite color?
As you may have guessed by looking at my journal, teal. :)

25. Employed?
Yes.  I work as an online English tutor.

26. Can you whistle?
I can, yes.  *whistles to prove it*

27. Where were you born?
 Colorado.

28. Siblings?
I have half-sisters and a step-sister and two step brothers.

29. Surgeries?
I had to have surgery when I had pneumonia and I had an abscess in my lung, though I was unconscious at the time (I had been on a ventilator for 18 days), so I only found out about the surgery after the fact. Other than that, I once needed oral surgery for dental issues.

30. Shower or bath?
I prefer baths if I have to pick one or the other.

31. Last album you listened to?
I’m honestly not sure.  Lately, I’ve been listening mostly to singles rather than whole albums.

32. Age?
I'm 32. (And I coincidentally match the number of this question.)

33. Broken bones?
I broke my wrist when I was in 7th grade, and it still gives me some trouble even now, though, on the plus side, I can sometimes predict when it will storm.  I’ve also broken a couple toes over the years.

34. How many TVs are in your house.
One, though we don’t have cable, so right now, it’s mostly a very large modern art piece.

35. Worst pain?
The very worst pain I’ve ever felt actually happened when I was in second grade. It was when I was in gymnastics at the time, and I was practicing handstands in the living room.  There was space enough to do that, but, unfortunately, I didn’t realize that I was moving closer to the coffee table as I went. On my last attempt, I fell over, and my ankle came down right on the corner of that coffee table.  I didn’t break my ankle, thank the Lord, but it was a bad sprain, and it’s the only time in my life that I’ve ever been in so much pain that every muscle just locked up. I couldn’t move for a solid minute when it happened.  That tops my list.  The chest tubes I needed when I had pneumonia are a very close second.  Third was my broken wrist.

36. Do you like to sing?
Yes, I do, though not in front of others.  I love performing usually (acting, dancing, I was in marching band, etc.) but singing in front of others, for some reason, makes me terribly nervous, and I just don't enjoy it.

37. Are you parents still alive?
Yes, they are.

38. Do you like camping?
I’ve only been camping once, and I didn’t enjoy it much, I must admit.  Though, the tent I was in wound up on a hill, and there was an awkward lump of hard ground right beneath me, so that may have influenced my experience a little.

39. What do you enjoy binge-watching?
I actually don’t binge-watch things often. I usually enjoy watching just a few episodes at time when I find a good show or an old favorite. Though, I have to say, one show I could binge watch is the Christian series, "The Chosen," which is the first episodic presentation of the Gospels ever made. It's amazing and so very well done. I could keep watching it for hours. The creators of the show allow you to watch the first episode for free online. I couldn't stop there, though, and bought the rest of the episodes they have produced so far. I'm really looking forward to more.

40. Pumpkin or Pecan pie.
I enjoy pumpkin pie a lot around the holidays.  I’ve never actually had the chance to try pecan pie, though I want to sometime.

laughtersmelody: (Broken keys)
I just couldn't resist passing this on. :) I'm a fan of the Christian band MercyMe, and they have a new album coming out next month. They just released a single from it, and it's absolutely beautiful. It's one of the best - and most powerful - Christian songs I have ever heard. It has such an incredible message. The song is called "Even If."

According to the ACLJ, Pastor Hassan received a 12-year prison sentence. He has 15 days to appeal his conviction.

Please continue to keep him in your prayers, and if you haven't already, and you want to sign the petition for his release, you can do so here.

laughtersmelody: (Come to me)
Once again, in Sudan, two Christian pastors were arrested under false charges. According to the ACLJ's website:

"In Sudan, there is a deadly crackdown on Christians. Two Christian pastors – Rev. Hassan Abduraheem and Rev. Kuwa Shamal – were arrested and imprisoned by Sudan’s Islamist Security Services on trumped-up national security charges because of their Christian faith. Pastor Kuwa has now been freed, but Pastor Hassan still faces a possible death sentence for his Christian faith. Join us as we mobilize our global offices to demand his immediate release."

The judge is supposed to issue his verdict for Pastor Hassan this weekend. If you want to sign the petition for his release, you can do so here.

It takes only a minute. Please also keep them and the ACLJ in prayer.

Hey, everyone. :)

I have been working more on my Etsy shop, Crafting Hear to Heart, and if anyone is interested, I'm having an after Christmas sale - $4.00 off on everything when you use the code ACS2016 during checkout. The sale will last until January 10th. :)

I've also been working on creating a wider variety of ornaments, making them out of different materials, like yarn. I'm really excited about the new designs. The yarn hearts I've nickname "sweater hearts," because they really do wind up looking like they're wearing sweaters, lol. :)

Here’s how one of those hearts turned out:

I'm planning to use some faux suede as well, and I've begun making hearts out of felt with various designs on the front. I'm also playing with the idea of doing something fandom-inspired, though I'd certainly be careful not to violate any copy rights. Some fandoms would be harder that others, but it might be a fun thing to make. :D

If you're interested in something specific, please let me know, because I take custom orders. Just message me here or on Etsy, and we can talk about what you want. There’s no extra charge, unless I have to buy new materials, and you can still use the discount I mentioned above.

Hopefully that didn’t sound too much like an infomercial. One of these days, I will post a regular journal entry. Really I will, lol.

Take care and God bless, and I hope you had a very merry Christmas!

Occasionally, I surf around Youtube looking for interesting videos, and often I find myself watching some of those “list” videos because they usually have some fun/quirky facts to learn and cool pictures to see. I was watching a video about various places on earth that you won’t believe exist, and saw a picture of a Zhangye Danxia National Park, which is located in the Gansu province in China. As soon as I saw that picture, I knew I had to find more. It’s simply amazing. It looks like someone went wild with Photoshop, but the photos aren’t manipulated. (Note: These photos are from a few difference sources I found around Google. I'm only borrowing them to admire. :) )

The pictures were too gorgeous not to share. :) God’s handiwork is incredible.
